Lesbian panic shuts down Mississippi high-school prom
Mississippi's Itawamba County school district has cancelled a prom after Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old student, asked permission to bring her girlfriend as her date. The student planned to wear a tux. The school district's bureaucratic non-excuse for the cancellation is that it's "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events." The district appears to be tap-dancing around the reason for the cancellation in an effort to avoid openly saying "We are scared of teh ghey," since that would open them up to legal liability. The ACLU isn't buying it. They've told the school district that they've got until Wednesday to change the policy or else.
Google, HTC Respond to Apple Lawsuit
Here's a thought, Apple, instead of trying to destroy a competing phone OS, why not try to make a better phone OS?
Today's "the day after". The day after Apple started a patent war with HTC and Google. Today, we have statements from both HTC and Google, and a number of other people have weighed in as well as to the possible ramifications of Apple's lawsuit.

RIP, Hummer
Having failed to sell the Hummer brand off to a Chinese car manufacturer, GM is shutting it down. This car was like the high-fructose corn syrup of automobiles, something that concentrated everything bad about motoring until it underwent a phase-change and somehow became an object of desire.
And not a moment too soon.

Australian Judge Rules Facts Cannot Be Copyrighted
Last week, an Australian Judge ruled that copyright laws do not apply to collections of facts, regardless of the amount of effort that was spent collecting them. In this case, the case surrounded the reproduction of entries from the White and Yellow Pages, but the ruling referred to a previous case involving IceTV, which republishes TV guides. Does this mean that other databases of facts, such as financial data, are also legally able to be copied and redistributed?
Men at Work ripped off Kookaburra tune - Judge
Aussie pop group Men at Work ripped off an Australian folk tune in their 1980s smash hit Down Under, a federal court judge has found.
Justice Peter Jacobson said the famous flute riff from the pop hit was unmistakably the same as the children's tune Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree, penned more than 75 years ago by Toorak teacher Marion Sinclair for a Girl Guides competition.

Attorney-General Michael Atkinson has made a "humiliating" backdown and announced he will retrospectively repeal his law censoring internet comment on the state election.
Australia bans graphic games ... sort of
Last month, the government gave the green light to controversial plans to censor the internet and now fans of computer games have started a political party to protest the censorship of globally best-selling adult games.
Founder of the Gamers 4 Croydon party, David Doe, is busy preparing his party’s platform in the state of South Australia, where an election is due to be held on March 20. The
single-issue party’s candidate is yet to be chosen but will run against the South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, who strongly opposes an adults-only rating for computer games, in the state’s electorate of Croydon.

CSKA Moscow and Paul Shirley with Two Very Different Responses to the Devastation in Haiti
In the aftermath of the recent Haiti earthquake, most people around basketball have done their part to help the cause. Countless players have donated thousands of dollars each, and the league has chipped in with the kind of donation you'd expect from a large corporation, too.
Alas, there are some who take the opposite approach. Former NBA-er and writer Paul Shirley has his own ideas about what we should do for Haitians (via SBNation). Namely, nothing:
"I haven’t donated a cent to the Haitian relief effort. And I probably will not. [...]
Shouldn’t much of the responsibility for the disaster lie with the victims of that disaster? [...]"
