Internet filter: just geeks beating their chests?
Mark Newton and others have done a fine job of presenting a technically competent, clean-cut techie's view of the debate. But that is as much a problem as it is a solution. The wave of the hand and the simple "you must be in favour of kiddie porn" (or some such throw-away line) is unfortunately too effective in dismissing such reasoned arguments, and as Mehlman noted, politicians are totally immune to both reason and sarcasm.
ALIA join forces with Inspire Foundation, Google and Yahoo to battle Senator Conroy's internet filter
The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) have teamed with the Inspire Foundation and both large search engines Google and Yahoo!, who have jointly released a statement to Senator Conroy regarding the internet filter.
"As a large proportion of child sexual abuse content is not found on public websites, but in chat-rooms or peer-to-peer networks, we know the proposed filtering regime will not effectively protect children from this objectionable material.
In fact, the policy may give parents a 'false sense of security' encouraging them to reduce their supervision."

Attorney-General Michael Atkinson says gamers pose a greater risk to his safety than bikies
Attorney-general Michael Atkinson has told a national television show he and his family are more at risk from video gamers than bikies.
In an interview on ABC2's Good Game program last night, Mr Atkinson said he had been the target of "criminal defamation" and threats from people campaigning for a national R18+ rating for computer games.

SK Telecom crams Android, processor inside a SIM card
The SIM cards in cellular telephones might be smaller than a postage stamp and less than a millimeter thick but that hasn't stopped South Korea's SK Telecom from cramming all the major components needed to run Google's Android OS inside one of them.
7 Creative Uses for Poop
As long as the animal kingdom exists, we’ll have a steady supply of digestive byproducts, whether you call it dung, manure, sewage, feces, or poop. We may as well use it for something! Oh sure, you know about fertilizer, but there are plenty of other ways we reuse “biological waste”.
Star Wars never looked so real
This set of images, where the Star Wars scenes appear so realistic, is called “StArt Wars”. The shooting of the photos happened in Dubai and is directed by photographer Cedric Delsaux from France. The project shows how Star Wars would look if it took place on the earth instead of the space.
Obama arrives in Denver as Colorado's Lauren Nettina sues him, feds for $950 trillion over mass conspiracy
In 1964's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, U.S. Air Force General Jack D. Ripper set in motion the mutually assured destruction of the Cold War superpowers due to his paranoid belief that the Soviet Union was engaging in a covert campaign to taint "our precious bodily fluids."
R18+ Movies
A few weeks ago people may remember a very stupid law came in requiring all R18+ movies to be in their own section to apparently protect kids from the images on the covers.
I was in a video store the last week and saw the stupidity in action.

God Is No Excuse
We are all born, and we have no choice in that. We have no choice as to the situation we are born into, good or bad. We have no responsibility for negative hardships that exist at the time of our birth anymore than we can take credit for any inherent advantages. We come into this world blind, ignorant and incompetent and we learn about our environment, the limitations and the potentialities as we develop. Each one of us share this experience. In fact, this is one of the few universal things that we all share equally. We are born, we share the vulnerabilities as humans to illness, pain, hunger, violence and suffering, and then we die. These are facts. This is the situation that all of us share. These are the things we have in common that none of us can escape. These are the things that none of us can exercise any substantive control over. We are born, we are vulnerable and then we die.
Chuck Norris botnet karate-chops routers hard
If you haven't changed the default password on your home router, you may be in for an unwanted visit from Chuck Norris -- the Chuck Norris botnet, that is.
Discovered by Czech researchers, the botnet has been spreading by taking advantage of poorly configured routers and DSL modems, according to Jan Vykopal, the head of the network security department with Masaryk University's Institute of Computer Science in Brno, Czech Republic.
